5K Your Way

Understand why 5K Your Way is being set up in Huddersfield and Halifax as well as the benefits and how to register.

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust's Cancer Prehabilitation Team, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity and the Ella Dawson Foundation have teamed up with Move Against Cancer to launch 5K Your Way physical activity support groups in Huddersfield and Halifax.

The benefits of keeping active are known to help people cope with cancer treatment. Movement through and beyond a cancer diagnosis can help to reduce treatment related fatigue, help preserve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, may reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, and can help to prevent recurrence. Importantly, physical activity can help to improve psychological and emotional well-being and is a fun and great way to meet people.

5K Your Way is a community-based initiative from the Move Charity to encourage those living with and beyond cancer, families, friends, and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at a designated 5K Your Way parkrun event. Every group will be led by at least one volunteer 5K Your Way Ambassador, who acts as the focal point for the group. Participants will receive a very warm and friendly welcome, and everyone is encouraged to do as little or as much as they want or simply join together for a drink and a chat. This event is launching on Saturday 30th September at Greenhead Park in Huddersfield and Shroggs Park in Halifax with a 8:45am meet for a 9:00am start, this will happen on every last Saturday of each month.

"At 5K Your Way, we encourage people to focus on what they CAN do. We want to give people they confidence to go out and be physically active and to feel the benefits of exercise both physically and mentally. We are absolutely delighted to be working with each organisation to bring 5K Your Way to Huddersfield and Halifax. Over the years, we have seen a huge impact 5K Your Way has on physical and mental health as well as building a wonderful, supportive and inspiring community in each group. We are super excited to launch these two new groups and grateful to Nicky Hill and her team at CHFT and Ella Dawson Foundation, CHFT Charity, Active Calderdale and TSL Kirklees for supporting the delivery and funding of these new groups." - Georgie Freeman, 5K Your Way Operations Manager.

"I'm really excited for the people of Halifax and Huddersfield affected by cancer to have this as an opportunity to be active. We've had great funding support from local partner organisations as well as CHFT Charity abnd have an enthusiastic group of ambassadors and supporters to guide people around the 5K Your Way routes. I'll be there at Halifax on the Last Saturday of each month and look forward to welcoming people!" - Nicky Hill, Prehabilitation Lead at CHFT.

"We know from Ella's own experience and from the young people with cancer we support each week, just how powerful physical activity is through and beyond cancer. We are very excited to be ambassadors for 5K Your Way in Huddersfield and are really looking forward to welcoming and supporting people!" - Tasha Dawson, Cancer Rehabilitation Practitioner at the Ella Dawson Foundation.

"We are delighted to be supporting this initative and lucky enough to be able to fund items to enhance each group thanks to kind donations into CHFT Charity.
